A Future KeptPsalm 121:8

The Wedding Was Going to Be in That Garden

This message is for to face a future that has been erased, without pretending it has not been

The hall smells of floor polish and cold radiators. There is a stack of chairs against the far wall, forty high, and a woman with a clipboard is explaining the two kinds: the plain ones are included, the ones with the covers are extra per chair, and most people go with the covers for a wedding.

He says that sounds sensible. He writes the number down in the corner of the page she gave him.

The strip light in the middle of the ceiling has one tube that hums. He can hear it while she is talking about the kitchen access and the eleven o'clock finish. He nods at the right places. He has been nodding at the right places for five months.

Because he can see the other one. He can see it exactly. The long tables down the grass under the apple tree, the way the light went gold at about seven because the garden faced west, the wall his father built along the side in 1978 with the wrong bricks, which everyone always laughed about. He had it in his head for eleven years, since the boy was fourteen and it was still a joke between them. He knew where the tables would go. He knew which neighbors would come out and stand at the fence.

The house went in April. How it went is its own story and it is not the point this morning.

The woman with the clipboard asks if he wants to think about it. He says no, the plain chairs are fine, and then he stands in the middle of a hired hall holding a piece of paper and cannot make himself walk to the door.

That is you. In a hall, in an office, in a kitchen with a calendar you cannot look at. Holding a piece of paper about a version of your life that is fine, that is perfectly serviceable, that will absolutely do, and finding that you cannot get your feet to move.

Three things before we go on.

This is not a failure of faith. Planning was not presumption. You were not being greedy when you pictured the apple tree, and God is not correcting you.

I am not going to explain it to you. I do not know why this happened, and I will not tell you what it is for.

And I am not going to tell you the new plan will be better. I do not know that. Nobody knows that, and a man who says it to you is guessing at your expense and calling it comfort. What was lost is lost, and it is allowed to matter as much as it matters.

The Two Doors in Psalm 121

There is a short psalm that people sang on a road, walking, usually uphill and usually tired, and it ends on a line that is bigger than it looks.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.Psalm 121:8

Going out and coming in. In that language it is not two events, it is the whole of a life in motion: every leaving and every arriving, the ordinary door in the morning and the ordinary door at night, for as long as a man keeps using doors. It is the phrase you use when you mean everything a person does between now and the end.

Now read what it does not say. It does not say the road is the road you drew. It does not name a destination, a date, a house, a garden or an apple tree. It puts a Keeper on the traffic and says nothing at all about the itinerary.

You are kept in the going out you did not choose, and the keeping did not lapse when the plan did. That is not my opinion offered kindly: Psalm 121:8 attaches the preserving to the man and not to his arrangements, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a promise about doors feel like something under a man's feet in a hall that smells of polish.

And look where it starts. From this time forth. Not from when things settle down. Not from the far side of this, when the wedding is over and the accounts are straight and a man can think again. You have a Keeper on this morning, the actual one, the one with the clipboard in it. What is written says from this time forth, which is a phrase with no waiting room in it, and the Spirit of God does not schedule Himself for the version of your life that is easier to attend.

What He Did Not Promise, and What He Did

I want to be careful with you here, because this is where a lot of well-meant writing does damage.

He did not promise a replacement garden. He did not promise that the hall will turn out lovely, that the photographs will be better indoors, that in ten years you will laugh about the strip light. Maybe. I do not know. You are not required to believe anything about how this turns out in order to be held right now. Psalm 121 keeps every one of its promises about the Keeper and makes not one about the route, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting on your optimism before He does His work.

What He did promise is the thing you actually needed at seven o'clock this morning, before you got in the car. You have not walked out of one single day unaccompanied, including the day in April, and you are not walking out of this one alone either. That is what the written word puts on the record, and the same Spirit who kept the men singing that psalm up a hill is keeping a man in a hired hall who cannot get his feet to the door.

And the eleven years you spent picturing it were not wasted years. A father who imagines his son's wedding under a tree is doing something good. You were loving him in those eleven years, and love is never the part of a plan that gets erased. His word says love never fails, and the Spirit who poured that love into you in the first place has not taken it back because the address changed.

Which is why it helps to watch this happen to somebody who is not you.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is smaller and better than a new plan. You are not being asked to picture anything, and you are not being asked to want the hall. What is being handed to you is a Keeper for one day at a time, exactly as Psalm 121:8 has it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a promise about going out and coming in into something a man can lean weight on.

It is received rather than achieved. There is nothing to work up in a car park. You have already been given the company you are trying to find the strength to do without. His word says He never leaves and never forsakes, and never is a finished word with no conditions attached to it about how well a man is coping in the fifth month.

And one plain thing, calmly, because this is written for people in the first weeks. If your thoughts have gone as far as not being here at all, tell one human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who can sit down with you. Somebody with a face, today. Then come back and finish this.

Declare this over yourself

This is not authority you built. It is yours in Christ, given to you and not achieved, and the plans that are gone never earned it while their going cannot take it off you. Say these under His will and leave the outcome with Him: however He answers about the day, the hall and the years after it, He decides that and it was never your job to know.

You are agreeing out loud with a promise that was made about doors and not about gardens. Psalm 121:8 is where it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it from a road song into a hired hall on a Tuesday morning.

  1. Hired hall with the strip lights, you do not decide what is kept. My going out and my coming in are preserved by the God who does not sleep, and no venue, no sale and no date has ever had a vote on that. I am kept.
  2. Lie that I have nothing left to give him, get out in the name of Jesus. Eleven years of loving that boy under an apple tree were not erased by an address, and the God who put that love in me has not withdrawn one ounce of it.
  3. Lord, You preserve my going out and my coming in from this time forth, and this time is a Tuesday in a car park. Your word made no promise about the garden and every promise about the road, and Your Spirit is walking me out of this door today. I am writing down what is gone, and then I am saying this over the day I actually have.
