Twenty to midnight, and the kitchen table has three ring binders on it, all open flat, one of them held down with a mug. Module fourteen of sixteen. The tabs are colored by unit and she colored them herself in the first week of the first year, back when coloring tabs felt like the beginning of something.
The laminated timetable is on the fridge under a magnet shaped like a strawberry. Tuesdays and Thursdays, six until nine, plus the Saturday blocks in February. Three years of that. Three years of eating in the car between work and class, of a daughter who learned to do her own hair because Tuesday is class night, of a husband who says he does not mind and mostly does not.
Four months to the final assessment. Four.
She was not even looking for it. She was looking up a supplier code and the trade page loaded underneath the search, and the headline was eleven words long, and she read it standing up with the mouse still in her hand. Both remaining labs in the county. December. A statement about consolidation and a photograph of a building she has been inside exactly twice.
She sat back down. She read module fourteen for another forty minutes, because the assignment is still due on Friday and nobody has told her it is not. Somewhere around eleven she stopped reading and started only looking at the page, at the same paragraph, at the little diagram with the arrows.
The group chat has been quiet since half past nine. Twenty-two people who have carried each other through three years of this. Somebody typed and stopped. Somebody else typed and stopped. Her own message sits half written on the screen: "Has anyone" and then nothing.
The tea in the mug still has the bag in it and it went cold two hours ago.
That is you at the table with the binder open, running the arithmetic on three years the way people run arithmetic at midnight, which is badly and over and over again. Or that is you with the acceptance letter, the mortgage in principle, the wedding date, the shifts you had already been promised, the picture of the next five years that fitted so exactly you had stopped calling it a plan and started calling it your life.
Hear me before anything else. The next five years being gone is not a small thing, and I will not make it a small thing to spare either of us. I am not going to explain it either. I do not know why that headline came in month thirty-two instead of month one, and anybody who tells you they know is guessing in a confident voice.
The voice comes from behind you
Read this next verse slowly, because almost every person who quotes it is facing the wrong direction when they do.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.Isaiah 30:21
Behind thee. Not ahead. Not printed on a wall where a woman could study it for three years before she committed anything to it. Behind. The word arrives at your shoulder, at the moment of the turn, and not one hour before it.
Which means the guidance promised in that verse was never a map. It was a Person, standing close enough to speak at the volume of a shoulder. And a map and a Person are not two versions of the same gift. A map can be obsolete by December. A Person cannot.
You are being led by a Voice and not by a visible road, and that has been the arrangement the whole time. Isaiah 30:21 puts the word behind the walker on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that closeness an actual experience rather than a lovely sentence, so nothing about tonight has changed the method.
You have not been left without direction because you cannot see four months ahead. What is written promises a word at the turn and never once promises the view from the top of the hill, and the Spirit does not consider a woman lost simply because she has run out of visibility.
You were not walking blind for three years and you are not walking blind at this table. The same verse that speaks at the right hand speaks at the left, which is Isaiah 30:21 covering both directions before either one comes up, and His Spirit has been at your shoulder through every Tuesday of it.
You are heard at twenty to midnight, in a kitchen, with a cold mug holding down a binder. That is not sentiment: Scripture puts the Teacher within earshot of the student rather than at the end of the course, and the Spirit is called the Comforter precisely because He arrives during and not afterwards.
He never promised you the map
Somebody is going to tell you this week that God closed a door. Somebody else is going to tell you the three years were preparation for something better. I am not going to say either sentence to you, and I want to tell you plainly why.
Because I do not know. Because the God who is honest enough to let Habakkuk count six losses out loud is not served by me inventing a reason and putting His name on it. And because "something better" is a promise about your outcome, and no one on this earth has the right to make you that promise.
You are not owed an explanation by anybody holding a verse and a theory. What His word actually gives you is not a reason, it is a Voice at the turn, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies that Voice at the moment it is needed rather than in a briefing beforehand.
You have a Keeper who was not surprised by an eleven word headline. Scripture says He knows the end from the beginning, and I am not using that to tell you the closure was arranged for your benefit, because it does not say that; I am telling you where you are held, and the Spirit is the one holding you there tonight.
Now turn around. Not to look for the road. To notice who is standing behind you.
You are kept by God tonight in exactly the way you were kept in month one, and none of what has been taken changes that. Isaiah 30:21 hands a walker a Voice and not a schedule, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between a woman who has lost a plan and a woman who has lost her God, which you have not.
One plain thing, and then we go on. If your thoughts have gone as far as not being here at all, tell one human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who can sit with you, and in the United States you can call or text 988. Being kept includes being kept by people whose phones ring.
You have not wasted a single Tuesday. I am not saying that because the hours will pay out later, since His word makes me no such promise and I will not forge one; I am saying that a life spent under the eye of God is never unaccounted for, and the Spirit keeps a record that no county closure can revise.
You were given a Teacher, not a timetable, and the Teacher is still in the room. That is the plain reading of Isaiah 30:21, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a promise written to a whole nation and makes it small enough and near enough for one woman at one table.
Declare this over yourself
None of what follows is available to you because your plan survived. It was given to you in Christ, it stands on a day when nothing is visible, and how any of this resolves belongs to Him, however He answers it. Say all three out loud at the table, once.
- Timetable on the fridge, you do not get to name my future. God holds what is ahead of me and not one line of that headline surprised Him. In the name of Jesus I put my hand on the door of a day I cannot see past.
- Voice that calls me a bad bet, get out of this kitchen. Isaiah puts the word behind the walker and never in front of her, so a woman who cannot see the road is exactly the person that promise was written for. I am walking today and the Teacher is at my shoulder.
- Lord, You did not lose track of me between module one and module fourteen. You keep the future I cannot see, and Your Spirit speaks at the turn and not a moment before, which is enough. I write down what is gone, and then I speak one sentence over the day in front of me.
Isaiah 30:21
