He Braces When the Mail Comes

This message is for to stand in what is left without waiting for the next blow

Twenty-eight minutes past nine. He is at the kitchen table with the second coffee and the laptop open on a spreadsheet he has not touched in ten minutes.

The gate goes. Then footsteps on the path, three of them. Then the flap.

Then the sound of things landing on the mat.

His shoulders come up around his ears. His breath stops somewhere in the middle. The coffee stops halfway to his mouth and stays there, and for about four seconds he is not a man at a table, he is an animal in a field with its head up.

He sits like that. He does not go out. He listens to the footsteps go back down the path and the gate swing, and he counts the ticks of the boiler, and after a while he puts the coffee down without drinking any of it. Then he goes into the hall.

A flyer from a gutter company. A bank statement. A card from his aunt with a robin on it, four months early, because she buys them in packs.

He picks them up and stands there in the hall with them in his hand, and he thinks, as he has thought most mornings for five months: what is wrong with me.

Nothing is wrong with him. Five months ago a letter came through that flap and landed on that mat and everything after it came out of that. His body learned the sound. That is all. It filed it away with the sound of a smoke alarm and the sound of a phone at two in the morning, and it has been on duty ever since, faithfully, every day at half past nine, and nobody ever told it it could stand down.

That is you. At the table with your shoulders up. Or looking at a name on your phone screen before you answer. Or opening your email in the morning the way a man opens a door he thinks something is behind.

Three things, and I want them plain.

The bracing is not a failure of faith. It is not unbelief and it is not you letting the side down. It is a body that learned something in one afternoon and has been doing its job ever since.

I am not going to explain any of it to you. I do not know why the letter came. I will not tell you what it was for.

And I am not going to promise you that nothing else is coming. I do not know that either, and a man who promises you that is writing a check on an account he does not hold. What I have for you is not a guarantee about the mat. It is a Person who has moved in.

Rooted, and Then Grounded

There is a prayer in Ephesians, in the middle of a long sentence that Paul never bothers to break up, and it asks for something more domestic than people usually notice.

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,Ephesians 3:17

The word behind dwell is not the word for visiting. It is the word for settling down and living somewhere: moving the furniture in, knowing which stair creaks, being there at half past nine on an ordinary Tuesday. It is the difference between a guest and a resident.

Then two pictures, and they are deliberately from different trades. Rooted is a tree. Grounded is a building. One goes down into soil and the other goes down into footings, and both of them are about what happens before any weather arrives.

You are rooted in something that went down long before that letter came up the path, and roots are not installed during storms. That is not a comforting thought I am adding: Ephesians 3:17 puts the rooting in love and the love in Christ's actual residence in a person, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that settling, which is exactly what Paul says two verses earlier when he asks to be strengthened by His Spirit in the inner man.

Now here is the thing about a root that nobody says. A root does not stop the wind. It has never stopped one. You have not been given something that prevents weather, and you were never promised that. What is written promises a resident and a rooting, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a resident feel like a resident, and nowhere in the prayer does Paul ask for the wind to stop.

What the Bracing Is Actually For

Your body is not being faithless at half past nine. It is being loyal. It is standing at a post nobody relieved it from.

And I am not going to tell you the worst has passed. You said that. I am taking your word for it and I am not adding anything to it, because it is your life and not mine, and men who announce from the outside that somebody's crisis is over do real damage. You are not required to declare anything finished in order to be held today. His word puts the rooting and the indwelling in the present tense with no reference to how the year turns out, and the Holy Spirit does not wait for an all clear before He settles into a man.

So what actually ends bracing is not effort, and this is the part I most want you to have. You have a resident, not a visitor, and He was already unpacked in you when the flap went this morning. Ephesians 3:17 says dwell, which is a word about staying, and the same Spirit who moved Him in is the one who makes the staying real to a man standing in his own hallway with a robin card in his hand.

And notice how Paul says it comes: by faith. Faith is the open hand that receives it. It is not a fee, it is not a level you reach, and nobody in that sentence is being told that a stronger man would be steadier by now. You are receiving this and not earning it, and there is no bar in the verse for you to fail to clear. That is what stands written, and the Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed for five months.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a technique for stopping the jump. You are not being asked to be unafraid of the mat, and you are not being asked to be over anything. Ephesians 3:17 asks for a resident and a root, exactly as it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes both of those into something a man can feel in his shoulders rather than agree with in his head.

What there is to receive is smaller and better than a guarantee. You are already inhabited, and the tenancy did not start on a good week. His word says Christ dwells in the heart by faith, and dwelling is a settled word with no notice period in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps that true on the mornings when the whole house feels provisional.

And one plain thing, calmly, because this is written for people still inside it. If your thoughts have gone as far as not being here at all, tell one human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit down with you. Somebody with a face, today. Then come back and finish this.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is authority you generated. It is yours in Christ, given to you and not achieved, and five steady months would not have earned it while five bracing ones have not cost you an ounce of it. Say these under His will and leave the outcome with Him: however He answers about the letters, the year and whatever else comes up that path, He decides it and you were never asked to guarantee it.

You are agreeing out loud with a tenancy that started before the shaking did. Ephesians 3:17 is where it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it out of a prayer in a letter and into a hallway at twenty-eight minutes past nine.

  1. Pile on the mat, you do not decide how I stand in my own hallway. Christ has moved into this heart and He is a resident and not a visitor, and no envelope on this floor has ever had a key to the house. I am standing on that.
  2. Bracing that has become my personality, get out in the name of Jesus. My body was being loyal and not faithless, and the God who rooted me in love does not hold five months of flinching against a man, and I am not waiting at that door for the next blow.
  3. Lord, You are dwelling in me and Your word calls it dwelling and not visiting. Your Spirit put the roots down in me long before that letter came up the path, so I am opening both hands in this hall this morning and saying who is holding me. I am anchored in You, whatever comes through that flap.
