The paste has gone tacky in the jar because she has been sitting still for forty minutes.
It is a good bench. Her bench, in her own workshop now, window over the sink, brass weights lined up along the back edge, and a nineteenth century hymnal in pieces in front of her with its spine off and its sections stacked in order under a board.
She picks up the bone folder.
And she cannot go on, because the way she is holding it is the way he holds it. Two fingers along the spine of the tool, thumb underneath, wrist loose. He told her that in a cold room when she was twenty-two, and he said it about four hundred times after that, and it is in her hands now the way her own name is in her mouth.
Everything on this bench came from him. The paste recipe, thinned that far and no further. The trick with the tissue. The habit of laying the sections out left to right so you can see the whole book before you commit to anything. The thing he always said, that a repair should be honest, that it should never pretend to be original work.
That last one keeps coming back at her this week.
There is a letter. There is an investigation, and there are people asking her, gently and not so gently, what she knew and when. There is a version of him going round now that she has to hold beside the version she had, and the two will not go in the same room.
So the hymnal sits under its board with its sections in order, and she sits with a bone folder in her hand and a jar of paste going tacky, and she cannot do one hour of her own work without using something he gave her.
That is you.
Maybe it was not a workshop. Maybe it was a pastor, a supervisor, a father, a friend of thirty years. Maybe half your vocabulary about God came out of his mouth and now you cannot pray a sentence without hearing it in his voice.
Three things before we go anywhere near a verse.
I am not going to prosecute him here, and I am not going to defend him either. That is not what this page is for. I am not going to ask you to forgive anybody today, because comfort does not come after forgiveness on a schedule somebody else set, and nobody gets to bill you for that this week. And nobody, in any sentence of this, is going to suggest you should have seen it coming. You were taught by somebody you trusted. That is what being taught is.
Three things the psalm says, and none of them are about him
There is a short verse at the end of a very loud psalm. It is a list of three, and I want to walk you along it slowly.
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.Psalm 100:5
Good. Merciful. True. Three separate claims, and every one of them is made about God Himself, not about the people who carry His name around.
That distinction is not a technicality this week. It is the floor.
You are not standing on a man's character, and you never were, even in the years when it looked like you were. Psalm 100:5 puts the goodness in the Lord and leaves it there, and the Holy Spirit is the one who taught you to recognize goodness in the first place, which is a thing He did in you and not a thing anybody handed over with a bone folder.
Now look at that third word, and look at what it survives. His truth endures to all generations. Generations. That is a word about people, one after another, and every single generation on that list contained somebody who failed.
You have a truth in your hands this morning that does not become false because the person who passed it to you did wrong. That is exactly what enduring to all generations means in the written word, and His Spirit is called the Spirit of truth, which makes Him the one who guards it as it travels rather than leaving that job to whoever happens to be holding it.
And then the middle word, mercy. Everlasting mercy. Not a policy He is reviewing this week.
You were not deceived by God, and He has not changed His face toward you because of what somebody else did in the dark. Numbers 23:19 says He is not a man that He should lie, and the Spirit of God is described as a seal on a believer rather than a reference that can be withdrawn.
The skill in your hands is not evidence against you
Let me say the hard part gently, because a much harsher voice in your own head has already said it.
There is a thought that comes at three in the morning and it goes like this: if he was false, then everything he built is false, and I am a thing he built. Say it out loud and it sounds like an accusation. It is not one. It is grief doing arithmetic in the dark, and the arithmetic is wrong.
You are not counterfeit because he was. Scripture keeps the two things apart on purpose: Paul says some preached Christ out of envy and rivalry, and refuses to conclude that Christ was therefore not preached (Philippians 1:15 to 18), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a word land in a person, which is why a true thing can travel through unclean hands and arrive true.
That wrist, loose, two fingers along the spine of the tool. That is yours now. He taught it and it is still correct and it is still in your hands, and holding a bone folder properly this afternoon is not loyalty to him.
You have not lost your own competence, and you have not lost the years. The written word says God is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown (Hebrews 6:10), which puts the record of those years with Him rather than with an investigation, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it.
And the part of you that broke here, the part that trusted, that opened, that believed a person: that part is not a fault in your design. You are not being asked to become somebody who trusts nothing. Psalm 100 is a psalm about coming in through the gates, and the Spirit is called the Spirit of adoption and not the Spirit of caution.
So nothing is being asked of you today about him. Not a decision, not a statement, not a feeling somebody expects to see arrived at by Friday. You do not owe anyone your position on this man, and you do not owe him access to you.
What is being offered is much closer in, and it is about who is on the other end of your trust.
You are held by a God who has never once been the thing that was revealed about somebody else, and He is not on trial in your kitchen tonight. Psalm 100:5 is a claim about His own character, made about Him and not about His representatives, and the Holy Spirit is the one who witnesses to that inside a person when every human reference has just come back unusable.
You have somewhere to put the part of you that broke here, and it is not a place where you will be told you were naive. The written word says He is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18), and the Spirit He gave is the one described as helping our weakness when we do not even know what to pray.
One plain thing before we go on, because weeks like this one land harder than people admit. If your thoughts have gone as far as not wanting to be here at all, tell one human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who can sit with you. That is not drama and it is not a lack of faith, and you do not have to be at the worst point before you say it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at your own bench, with the tools where they are. The right to speak here is yours in Christ, given to you and not passed down to you by any man, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the words live rather than how certain you feel while saying them. Notice that Psalm 100 hands out its three claims about God without a single reference to how His people were behaving that year. And the outcome is His: what happens with the investigation, with him, with any of it, is not mine to promise, and however He answers it, that part belongs to Him.
- Bench with his tools still on it, you are not the verdict on my hands. Scripture says the Lord is good and His truth endures to all generations, and a true thing that came through him did not stop being true when he stopped being who I thought he was.
- Lie that I am counterfeit because he was, get out. In the name of Jesus I put you out of this workshop and out of three in the morning, because the written word says a man may preach Christ from the worst motive and Christ is preached still, and His Spirit is the one who made anything he taught me land at all.
- Lord, You are good and Your mercy is everlasting, and You have not deceived me. Your word says Your truth endures through every generation, including this one, and Your Spirit is the one holding the part of me that broke here. I am saying the true sentence out loud to You, and then I am saying who You are.
