He comes in four minutes late on purpose, and he sits in the back row, third seat from the door, with his coat still on.
He knows this room. He knows that the second ceiling tile from the window has a brown ring in it from the roof in 2011. He knows the carpet tiles in the entrance because he laid them himself over two Saturdays. He knows the noise the door makes if you do not lift it slightly on the handle, and he lifts it, out of habit, even tonight.
For thirty years he sat in the second row on the left, because that is where a man sat if he was serious. He had a notebook for it. He has fourteen of those notebooks in a box in the loft, in his own handwriting, and every one of them is in the same voice.
That is the thing nobody warned him about. It is not the room. It is that he cannot think a single thought about God without hearing it in that man's cadence. The way he reads a psalm is that man's way of reading a psalm. The way he pauses before the last line of a prayer is a pause he learned in 1997 from somebody who, it turns out, was somebody else entirely.
The lesson starts. Somebody new is teaching, and doing it decently, and he cannot hear a word of it. He is looking at the back of the heads in the second row on the left and thinking: I do not know how to listen anymore. Whatever it was in me that used to open, it is not opening.
At the end he goes out fast, and he lifts the door on the handle so it does not bang.
That is you, at the back of a room you helped build. Or in the car park afterward with the engine running. Or at home at half past ten with the fourteen notebooks in the loft over your head and no idea what to do with them.
Three things, before anything else.
You should not have seen it coming. Trust is not a failure of vigilance, and the person who deceived you is the only one who did the deceiving. Nobody sensible looks at a man who was lied to for thirty years and asks him why he believed.
This is not a failure of faith, and what is shaking in you is not your love for God coming loose. It is the wiring that ran between your love for God and one man's voice, and those are not the same thing.
And I am not going to ask you to forgive him tonight. That is not the first thing, it is not the price of being comforted, and I will not put it in your way. Sit down. Keep your coat on. We are going to start somewhere else entirely.
What Has Never Gone Out of His Lips
There is a psalm that is not usually read all the way to the bottom, because it starts in celebration and ends in something close to an accusation. The man who wrote it says God made a promise and then says, out loud and unedited, that it looks to him like the promise has been dropped. Both halves are in the Bible. Nobody edited him.
In the middle of it, before the complaint, sits this:
My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.Psalm 89:34
Read the second half slowly, because that is the half for you. Not only will He not break it. He will not alter it. He does not say one thing in a room and a different thing in a car. There is no private version of God that the people close to Him get, and no public version arranged for the ones who are not in the second row.
You have not been listening to two men, and there is no second face behind the one you have been reading in Scripture. That is not my reassurance to you: Psalm 89:34 is God putting His own consistency on the record in His own words, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a teacher, who has been making those words land in you since you were young.
Here is what happened to you, and it deserves saying accurately. Something in a person is built to open when a trusted voice speaks. Yours opened, correctly, for thirty years, and then it was found out and it slammed. You are not broken for finding it hard to open now, and the shutting is not rebellion. His word says a broken and a contrite heart He does not despise, and the same Spirit who wrote that line is not standing in your hallway waiting for you to be over this.
And notice who the psalmist trusts with his complaint. He does not take it to the elders. He takes it to God, and he says the harsh thing to His face, and God keeps it in the book. You are welcome to bring the whole of it, unsoftened, in the words you would actually use. That is written into the shape of Psalm 89 itself, and it is the Spirit who carries a man's raw sentence upward, so that nothing you say tonight arrives in heaven as an embarrassment.
The Part of You That Learned to Listen
There is a fear underneath this one that nobody says out loud, so I will. The fear is not really that the man was false. It is that thirty years of you was a fool.
You were not a fool. You were a man who did the thing a person is supposed to do, and what is written says love believes all things and hopes all things, so your trust was not a defect in you but an obedience, and the Holy Spirit does not treat it as a mistake to be corrected.
And the notebooks are not poison. Where a true thing was said, it was true, and it was true because it came out of the mouth of God long before it came out of anybody's mouth in that room. You have not lost one word that God actually said, because the thing that made it true never belonged to the man who read it out. Psalm 89:34 puts the keeping of the word with the One who spoke it, and the Spirit of truth is the one who guards it, which is why He is called that.
Which is why it helps, here, to watch it happen to somebody who is not you.
Here is the turn. You are not being asked to trust a person tonight, and nothing here requires you to walk back into any room or take any call. Psalm 89:34 is about a covenant, not about a relationship you are being nudged toward repairing, and the Holy Spirit does not push a man toward anyone who is not safe for him.
What is on offer is narrower and better. It is a Person who cannot turn out to be somebody else. You are already held by a God who has no other version of Himself and never had. That is what the psalm says with His own lips in it, and the Spirit who has kept that word intact across three thousand years of copyists is not going to lose your grip on it now.
And one plain thing, calmly, because this is written for the first weeks. If your thoughts have gone as far as not wanting to be here at all, tell one human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, one person who will sit with you. Somebody with a face, today. Then come back and finish this.
Declare this over yourself
None of this is authority you have generated. It is yours in Christ, given to you rather than achieved, and the man who deceived you never had the power to take it off you because it was never his to hold. Say these under His will, and leave the outcome with Him: however He answers about that man, that room and that box in the loft, He decides it and you do not have to.
You are agreeing out loud with a word older than every notebook in your house. Psalm 89:34 is where it is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it off the page and into a man in the back row.
- Back row of this room, you do not get to teach me who God is. What I learned that was true is still true because God said it first, and what was false was never His and it dies with the mouth that said it. I am still His.
- Voice that says I was a fool for listening, get out in the name of Jesus. My trust was not a defect, and the God who never altered one word that went out of His lips has not changed His mind about the man who trusted.
- Lord, Your covenant is not broken and Your word has not been edited by anything he did. Your Spirit is the one who taught me under that man's voice all along, and tonight I am saying the true sentence out loud to You and then saying who You are. I trust You with the part of me that broke here.
