A Future KeptPsalm 32:8

He Sold the House for the Move

This message is for you sold the house for a move that is not happening now, and you are in a rented room with boxes labeled for a kitchen that does not exist

The room is nine feet by eleven. He measured it the first night, pacing it heel to toe, because measuring a room is something to do.

There is a bed, a lamp on the floor, a rail with four shirts on it, and against the far wall, stacked three high and two deep, eleven boxes in his own handwriting.

KITCHEN. KITCHEN. KITCHEN GLASS. KITCHEN TOP CUPBOARD.

He wrote those on a Sunday in June with the marker in his teeth and the radio on, and he was in a good mood doing it, and he remembers being in a good mood, which is somehow the worst part.

The kitchen those boxes are labeled for is in a house six hundred miles from here that he has never stood in. The offer went in. The sale on this end went through, fast, faster than anyone expected, and they took the number because the move was the plan and the plan had been the plan for two years. Then the thing happened at the other end. It does not matter to you what the thing was. It was one phone call on a Wednesday and the whole far end of his life came off the board.

So the house is sold. Somebody else is in it. There is a photograph of it on a website with their furniture in it already.

And he is in a rented room nine feet by eleven with eleven boxes marked for cupboards that do not exist anywhere on the earth.

He has not unpacked one of them. He is not going to. Unpacking KITCHEN GLASS into a room with no kitchen is not a thing a man can make himself do at nine at night, and putting them in storage means admitting something he is not ready to admit, so they stand there, three high, in his handwriting.

That is you.

Maybe it was not a house. Maybe it was a course you left a job for. A business you signed for in February. A wedding with the deposits down. A room painted for somebody who is not coming. But there is a version of your life that had a shape to it, and you paid real money and real years toward that shape, and it is gone, and there is still evidence of it stacked against a wall where you have to look at it.

Two things before we take one more step.

That was a real future and you have really lost it. I am not going to call it a redirection. I am not going to call it a door closing so another one could open. I have taken down a building I drew myself, walls up, ground failed under it, and I know exactly what a man wants to hit when somebody tells him it was for the best.

And I am not going to explain it. I do not know why the call came on that Wednesday. Nobody who has told you they know is telling you the truth.

He never issued you a map

There is one line I want to put in the middle of that room, and it is small on the page and enormous in the hand.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.Psalm 32:8

Guide thee with mine eye.

Not guide thee with a chart. Not hand thee a route with the whole distance drawn on it and a date at the far end. His eye. That is close range language. That is somebody near enough that a look does the work, the way a man on a job site catches his apprentice's eye across a slab and the apprentice knows.

Read what that means for the way you have been living. You have a Guide and you have never once had a map, and the difference between those two only shows up on a week like this one. Psalm 32:8 puts the guidance in an eye rather than a document, and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as the one leading a person, in the present tense, day by day, not the one who issued them a schedule two years ago.

A map is wonderful. A map also lets you walk on without ever looking up. You have not lost your way here, because your way was never a piece of paper you were holding. What is written in that psalm is that He instructs and He teaches and He guides, three verbs and all of them ongoing, and the Spirit of God is in a nine by eleven room tonight doing exactly that at exactly the range He always worked at.

What I am not going to promise you

I am not going to tell you a better house is coming. I do not know that. Nobody does, and men who say it are trading your future for a warm minute in a conversation.

I am not going to tell you this will make sense later.

And I am not going to tell you the new plan will be better than the one you lost, because that is the sentence that has been said to you four times this week and every time it landed it took something.

Here is what I will say. You are held by Someone who was not surprised by that Wednesday and did not have to redraw anything when it came. Psalm 32 has a man writing about being kept in the middle of trouble rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is God's own presence with a person inside the mess, which is a different thing entirely from a plan that got revised.

And the range He works at is one day. That is not a downgrade. That is what the eye means.

The breakthrough

So nothing is being handed to you tonight that is the size of the next five years. Nobody could hold that in a rented room at nine at night, and it is not on offer.

What is on offer is the range of an eye.

You have a Guide out in front of you at this minute, and He did not go quiet when the plan did. Psalm 32:8 says He instructs and teaches and guides in the present tense, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the one who leads the sons of God rather than a document that gets filed when circumstances change.

I will say one plain thing in the middle of this and then keep going. If in the last few weeks your thoughts have gone as far as not wanting to be here at all, tell one living human being today. Your doctor, or the crisis line where you live, or one person who will come and sit in that room with you among the boxes. Do that today, out loud, to somebody with a pulse.

And I am still not telling you how this turns out. You are kept for tomorrow by the One who holds what is ahead of you, whether or not you can see one foot of it. That is what is written in Psalm 32, and it is the Spirit of God who makes it hold weight in a man tonight instead of being a nice line about guidance. The boxes are still going to say KITCHEN in the morning. He is still going to be out in front.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these standing up, in the middle of that room. The authority to say them is yours in Christ, given to you and not earned by a good year, and a plan coming off the board did not reduce it by one inch. You are not begging here, you are standing on something that was handed to you. Psalm 32 is a man speaking out loud about being kept while the trouble is still around him, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes said words carry rather than the confidence of the man saying them. And every one of these goes up under His will, whatever He does with the road.

  1. Boxes marked kitchen, you are not a verdict on my life. Scripture says the Lord instructs and teaches and guides in the present tense, and no marker pen on a Sunday in June ever had the authority to define my future.
  2. Shame that I moved us for nothing, get out of this room. In the name of Jesus I put you out on the authority of what is written about a God who guides with His eye and not with a schedule, and His Spirit is the one in front of me while I cannot see one mile ahead.
  3. My God, You did not need my map and You were not surprised on that Wednesday. Your word says You go before me and guide me with Your eye, and Your Spirit is out ahead of this room tonight where I can see Him. I am writing one true thing down and speaking over the day in front of me, and that day is Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
