Third in the Pickup Line

She is third in line, which means she has about eleven minutes.

The car ahead of her has a bike rack with no bike on it. The engine is off. It is ten past three and the light is coming in low and gold through the windshield the way it does in that one particular week of the year, and there is a squashed granola bar in the door pocket that has been there since spring.

The appointment card is in the cup holder, face down. She turned it face down in the parking lot at twelve fifteen and she has not touched it since. She could tell you every word on it anyway.

Somebody taps the roof of the car.

It is the mother of a girl in the same class, leaning down to the open window with her sunglasses pushed up into her hair, and she says, so what are you all doing for the summer?

Here is the part that will be waiting for her at eleven o'clock with the dishwasher running: she answers. Out loud. In a completely ordinary voice. She says they might do the lake for a week, and that her sister has been asking about the cabin, and then she asks the same question back, and listens to the answer, and says that sounds great, and means it. The roof gets tapped again. The line moves up one.

The summer. She was asked about the summer three hours after somebody in a quiet room turned a screen toward her.

Nothing showed. That is what she cannot get over. Her face did what faces do. Her voice came out level. She made plans about a lake with a woman she likes, and the whole time there was a card lying face down in a cup holder with her own name printed across the top line.

That is you, third in the pickup line.

Maybe yours was a phone call in a stairwell, or a sentence your husband said in the car coming back from something ordinary, or a meeting that took nine minutes. Whatever it was, since then you have been doing small talk in a voice that works perfectly, and it frightens you a little how well it works.

Two things before anything else, and then I will sit down beside you.

The first is that your ground actually moved. Not your outlook. The ground. I am not going to talk you into a smaller version of it.

The second is that this is not a failure of faith, and I am not going to explain it to you. There is a kind of comfort that arrives holding a reason, and I do not have one, and I would not hand it to you if I did.

Nobody is asking you to hold still

That needs saying before the verse does, because this particular verse gets handed to women in your situation more than almost any other, and it usually arrives sounding like an instruction.

Isaiah says God keeps a person in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him. Read at speed, that lands as a job. Concentrate harder, believe better, and peace arrives as the wage. I have watched that reading do real damage in a kitchen at midnight.

But the word underneath stayed is a leaning word. It is what a tired man does against a doorpost. It is what a hand does when it is laid on something and left there with weight in it. It is not a word about concentration at all. It is a word about where your weight goes once your own has run out.

You are kept by something that is not your concentration, and it is keeping you at ten past three with the window down and your voice coming out level. That is not my sentiment about you: Isaiah 26:3 puts the keeping in God's hands and leaves the leaning as the only thing the person does, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that hold real in a woman who cannot turn a card over in a cup holder, rather than the amount of composure she can scrape together.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.Isaiah 26:3-4

Then the next line does something worth stopping on. It does not say trust and the trouble will lift. It says trust, because of what the LORD is: an everlasting rock. The reason given is not an outcome. The reason given is a Person, and the noun He takes is the oldest and least interesting noun in the language. A rock. Something that was there first, and is there after, and takes no interest whatever in your calendar.

You have a rock under you that is older than the appointment card, and it did not learn one new thing at twelve fifteen this afternoon. Isaiah 26:4 is put down as a fact about God, never as a reward for a good week, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old written fact carry weight in a body running on adrenaline. Nothing you were told today reached Him as news.

Everything solid you had has just been sorted into two piles without anybody asking your permission, and from inside the sorting it looks like the whole world went into one of them.

You were not standing on the lake week, and you were not standing on the five year picture, however much like the floor they felt when they went. What is written keeps the rock outside the person on purpose, which is how a woman can be shaking and standing on the same afternoon, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from a sentence somebody said into something you can put your weight on.

What the level voice actually was

Now the part you keep circling at eleven o'clock. The voice. How ordinary it sounded.

By tonight it has probably turned into evidence against you. That a person who could talk that easily about a lake cannot have been feeling it properly. That the calm was a lie. Or worse, that the calm was real, and something in you is broken in a way you had not known about.

You were carried through those eleven minutes, and the level voice is not a performance you owe anybody an apology for. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps us in our weakness, and the word behind helps is the word for taking hold of a load at the other end of it, which means what happened in that window was not done by you alone. It is mercy, and it has fingerprints on it.

You have not been left to get through this on the strength of how well you hold yourself together in a car window. Isaiah 26:4 hangs no condition of any kind on the word everlasting, and the Spirit who carried that line to a frightened nation is the same Spirit standing in your kitchen tonight.
