Small Talk at Pickup

This message is for standing in the usual group at school pickup doing three minutes of small talk about a bake sale, with the appointment letter still folded in your coat pocket

The letter is folded in three in her coat pocket, and her thumb has found the corner of it again.

She is in the usual spot, by the fence, in the usual four or five, the ones who have stood in roughly this arrangement every school day for two and a half years. Somebody's dog is tied to the post and keeping an eye on the gate. The flagpole rope is ticking against the pole in the wind, the way it does. Three fifteen. The doors have not opened yet.

There is a clipboard going around. Bake sale on Friday, and a pen tied to it with a piece of string that is too short, so everybody has to lean in awkwardly to sign.

It reaches her and she writes her name and, in the column, two dozen. Somebody says oh good, you always do the ones with the frosting. Somebody else says her oven is on its way out. There is a small conversation about whether store bought counts, and everybody agrees that it does, and everybody knows that it does not.

She says the right things. She laughs at the right time. Three minutes, maybe four.

And the entire time, her thumb is on the corner of a folded letter in her coat pocket, and the letter has a date on it that is nine days from now, and there is a word in the second paragraph that she has looked up twice.

The doors open. The little ones come out first in a rush, the way they do, and her son comes across the yard with his backpack on one shoulder and a painting held out in front of him like a tray, and she says wow, look at that, and she means it, and they walk to the car.

Nobody at that fence knows. Not because anybody there is cold. They are good women. It is that there is no version of the sentence that fits into four minutes and a clipboard, and she has run it in her head and there isn't one, and so she signs up for two dozen.

That is you, at the fence, thumb on the corner of it.

Maybe yours is a fence and maybe it is a break room, or a group message everybody else is being funny in, or a Sunday morning where you are asked how you are twelve times by people who mean it and there is no room in the question for the answer. The world carried on being the world. Your afternoon in March stopped, and everybody else's did not, and there is no rudeness in that and it is still the loneliest arithmetic there is.

Two things before anything else.

The first is that this is real. You are not being dramatic and you are not failing at friendship. There is a specific loneliness that belongs to a person carrying something the room does not know about, and it is not the same as being unloved.

The second is that I am not going to tell you why any of this happened, and I am not going to tell you to reach out to somebody. You know your own life. Some readers of this have three people they could call tonight, and some have none at all, and what I have to say has to be true for both, or it is not worth saying.

The pronoun changes in the dark part

Almost everybody knows the twenty third psalm. It gets said over caskets and cross stitched onto things, and the sheer familiarity of it can sand the edges off the one detail that matters most this afternoon.

Read the first three verses and notice who is being talked about.

He makes me lie down. He leads me. He restores my soul. He guides me. All of it third person, a man describing his shepherd to somebody else, the way you would describe a good doctor or a good neighbor. It is warm, and it is entirely about someone who is over there.

Then the ravine.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.Psalm 23:4

He is not talking about Him any more. He is talking to Him. That turn is the hinge of the whole psalm, and the Spirit of God is what keeps it from being merely an interesting fact about Hebrew poetry.

You have a God who closes the distance at the exact point where it gets dark, and the grammar of that psalm is where it shows. Psalm 23:4 turns from he to you precisely at the valley and never turns back, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that shift land in a woman with a folded letter in her pocket, rather than only in a room where somebody is reading it aloud.

That is not decoration. A man who kept sheep wrote it. He knew that a shepherd does not stand at the entrance of a ravine and call the flock through it, and he knew what the rod and the staff were, which were not symbols. They were two pieces of wood that a person carried and used in the dark, at close range, on the animal's own level.

You are accompanied at a distance of nothing at all, and the accompaniment did not begin when somebody noticed. What is written puts the shepherd inside the valley on the same path and at the same hour, and His Spirit is the one who makes that presence something a person can feel the weight of at three fifteen by a fence.

And look at the little word through. Not around, not over, not instead of. The psalm never suggests the valley was avoidable or that a better sheep would have taken another route.

You were not routed into this by anything you did or failed to do, and Scripture does not spend one word on that question. Psalm 23 hangs everything on who is walking beside the person rather than on how the person came to be in the ravine, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from being a comfort you have to argue yourself into.

What company actually is

I want to say something about what the psalm does not promise, because the missing thing is the reason this one lands.

It does not say the valley is explained. It does not say the sheep stops being afraid. It does not even say the sheep understands that anybody is there. What it says is that the shepherd is there, and the rod and the staff are there, and being with is offered as the whole of the comfort.

That is worth sitting with, because in your situation the thing that is actually missing at that fence is not advice. You could get advice. It is presence that knows.

You have a Presence in this that already knows the word in the second paragraph, and He has known it longer than you have. The written word puts the shepherd on the path at the same hour rather than waiting at the far end with a summary, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that companionship something other than an idea while a clipboard goes round.

You were not alone in the room where you read that letter, and you are not alone at this fence. That is not sentiment: Psalm 23:4 is written in the second person on purpose by a man who had been in actual dark places, and His Spirit is called the Comforter for the plain reason that comforting is what He came to do. Here is what that looks like from the outside.

The breakthrough

So nothing this afternoon is the size of nine days from now. You cannot carry the ninth day yet. It has not been handed to you.

You are standing at that fence accompanied, and the accompaniment does not depend on one person there knowing about the letter. Psalm 23:4 says you are with me in the middle of the darkest line in the psalm, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes with mean something in a coat pocket at three fifteen rather than only in a service.

One plain thing while we are here. If your thoughts have gone as far as not being around, or not waking up, tell one actual human being today: your doctor, a crisis line where you live, or one person who can come and sit with you. It is not a detour from this and it is not weakness, it is simply the next right thing. Then we carry on.

You have not been left to do this by yourself, whatever the count of people who know comes to. Scripture makes the shepherd's own presence the comfort rather than the size of the flock around a person, and His Spirit is the one who fills a gap that no human being was ever going to be able to fill anyway. Nothing here says your isolation is your own doing. It is not, and I will not let that stand in the room.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud in the car with the engine off, and say them badly if badly is how they come. The right to speak over your own afternoon is yours in Christ, given to you, and it is not a wage a well connected life pays out and a lonely one takes back; the authority in the words is His and not mine. Psalm 23:4 is the ground under them, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a spoken word land in a body rather than the number of people who know. They go up under His will, however He answers, because I do not know what the ninth day holds and I will not put words in His mouth about it.

  1. Bake sale on Friday, you are not a test I failed at that fence. Scripture puts the Shepherd inside the valley and not at the far end of it, and I am standing here accompanied whether or not one person by the gate knows it.
  2. Thought that nobody would come, get out. In the name of Jesus you do not get the last word on this afternoon, because the God whose word turns to speaking face to face in the darkest line of the psalm is here at close range, and His Spirit is company I did not have to arrange.
  3. Shepherd, You are with me at the fence with my thumb on the corner of a letter, and You did not need an introduction from anybody standing there. I thank You, because what You have written walks the person through the ravine instead of around it, and Your Spirit is the one breathing in the doorway. I am saying one name out loud, and then I am speaking to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
