She Prays for Everyone but Herself

Twenty past six, kitchen table, the notebook open at the back where the list lives.

She is good at this. That is the thing you would notice if you could stand in the doorway and watch. She is not reading anything off a card. She prays for Marion by name and then for the scan on the eleventh, specifically, the actual date. She prays for Dave, who has an interview and has had four already this year and is starting to talk about himself in a way she does not like the sound of. She prays for the boy at church whose father moved out in the spring, and she prays about the walk to school and the part where he goes quiet in the car.

She prays for her sister's back. She prays for the woman two doors down whose dog died, and she does not think that is a silly thing to bring, because it is not.

Eleven names. She knows them in order. Twelve or thirteen minutes, most mornings, and it is warm and unhurried and entirely real, and the tea goes cold beside her the way it does every day.

Then she gets to the bottom of the list.

And there is a space there. There has been a space there since March.

She says: "and be with everyone else." She says amen. She closes the notebook and takes the cold tea to the sink and pours it away and puts the kettle on again, and the day starts.

She has not asked God for one thing for herself since March.

Not because she forgot. She knows exactly why. Because the only sentence she actually has, the true one, the one waiting underneath all eleven of those names, is not a request at all. It is a question with an edge on it, and it has His name in it, and she is not going to say it out loud, because she is afraid of what saying it out loud would do to the two of them.

So she prays for Marion's scan instead. And Marion's scan needs praying for, and none of that was fake.

That is you.

Maybe your list is shorter. Maybe you say grace and read to your kids and pray in the car for other people, fluently, and there is one subject you steer around the way you steer around a pothole you have known about for months.

Two things before we go on.

I am not going to correct you today. Nothing in this is going to tell you that your question is unbelief or that you have drifted. And I am not going to defend Him from you. He has not asked me to, and He is not fragile, and the God who needs a middleman to keep His people polite is not the God who is actually in your kitchen at twenty past six.

The psalm starts in the wrong place on purpose

There is a prayer in the middle of the book that does not open the way a prayer is supposed to open. No throat clearing. No warm-up. No qualifying sentence to show that the man saying it has the right attitude.

Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.Psalm 130:1-2

Out of the depths. That is where he is standing when he starts, and he does not climb out first and then pray. He prays from down there, and the psalm goes in the book exactly like that.

And look who he is praying for. Himself. My voice. My supplications. Not one other name in the opening.

You are allowed to be the subject of your own prayer, and you were never taken off that list. Psalm 130 opens with a man asking for himself out of the deepest place he has, and the Holy Spirit is the one described as helping our weakness and interceding when a person does not even know how to word it (Romans 8:26).

Now notice what is not in those two verses. No explanation of how he got into the depths. No theology of the depths. No paragraph making sense of it.

You have not been asked to understand this before you are allowed to speak about it. The written word lets the man ask without accounting for himself first, and the Spirit of God is the one who carries a sentence like that to the Father rather than checking it at the door for tone.

And here is the part I want you to sit with, because it is the hinge.

The word for cried there is not a polite word. It is the noise a person makes. You are not disqualified by how you feel about Him this morning, and the feeling has not moved you an inch further from Him. Romans 8:38 to 39 puts a list of everything that might separate a person from the love of God and then says nothing on it does, and the Spirit is said to live in a person rather than to visit when the tone improves.

He is not going to be defended from you

Here is what I am not going to do, and I want you to hear me refuse it.

I am not going to tell you where He was in March. I do not know. Anyone who tells you they do is selling you something, and the price is your honesty.

You are not in trouble for the question, and you have not been quietly moved down any list because of it. Scripture gives a whole book to a man arguing his case at God and then says at the end that this man spoke rightly (Job 42:7), and the Holy Spirit is the one who stays with a person all the way through the arguing rather than waiting outside until it stops.

What I am going to tell you is what the book does with a person carrying a sentence like yours. It puts them in the text. Job says God has taken away his justice and Job is not struck down for it; he is the one at the end who is said to have spoken rightly. Jeremiah accuses God of deceiving him, out loud, in a book we still read on Sundays. The psalmist asks how long, and asks it again, and asks it a third time, and nobody edits the repetition out.

You have a place to put the sentence, and the place has always been Him. Scripture is full of people saying the unsayable thing directly to God and staying in the book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a prayer that comes out wrong and gets it where it is going.

And your eleven names, the ones you pray for so well. Those prayers were not a decoy or a performance.

You were praying with real faith every one of those mornings, and none of it counted less because your own name was missing from the bottom. The written word says the effectual prayer of a righteous person avails much (James 5:16), and it is the Spirit who has been in that kitchen at twenty past six all along, on the mornings that felt like something and the ones that did not.
